'Year Zero' (Part 3) by Karl Kessel

Long Island, New York, 1946: desperately trying to fend off the attacking Manitou that was once Dick Walsh, Bing, Millie and Ish are saved by the arrival of the local police, who shoot the creature dead. When it reverts to human form, the Sheriff attributes the attack to a wolf, and suspends his partner for killing Walsh in the crossfire. Returning to FBI Headquarters, Bing and Millie are given their next assignment by assistant Director Carver; but Bing has other plans, and he talks Millie into returning to Long Island to continue their investigations into Mr Xero. Sneaking into Dorothy Sears’ house, the duo is surprised when the housewife seemingly appears out of thin air, having been transmatted to Earth by Mr Xero from his home planet…

Egg Harbour City, New York, today: Mulder and Scully try to convince Mr Spoon that Mr Zero wants to kill him; but Spoon has another interpretation of recent events, believing the mysterious man to be protecting him. Later that night, Mulder and Scully stake out Spoon’s house, and discuss Mulder’s theory that Mr Xero was training Bing and Millie to accept new phenomena. The two agents see a light inside the house and rush in to save Spoon – and finally come face-to-face with Mr Zero…
