The Galvana mining operation on asteroid 21-Luticia is hit by a solar flare, which fries the base’s electrical system and sends the rock on a collision course into the sun. With the rest of <I>International Rescue</I> away on a mission in the Pyrenees, it is up to Alan and Kayo in <I<>Thunderbird 3</I> to rescue the lone miner in the doomed base. However, just as they are about to catch up with the rogue asteroid another solar storm strikes, knocking out <I<>Thunderbird 3</I>’s main power system – sending the spaceship shooting past the base and straight for the sun. As the ship’s hull starts to burn in the intense heat, Alan manages to restart <I<>Thunderbird 3</I>’s systems, enabling him to reverse course and land inside the mining base. Meeting up with the miner, Ned, and his pet plant Gladys, Alan and Kayo realise they no longer have enough fuel to get them back to Earth. Alan hatches a daring plan to use the mine’s explosives to alter the asteroid's trajectory, so that it slingshots around the sun and back home – but the slightest miscalculation will split the asteroid in two…
