'Skyhook' by Paul Giacoppo

While the International Rescue team enjoys three straight days of downtime, John takes the space elevator up to Thunderbird 5 to join EOS. But the Tracys’ peace is shattered when an electrical storm hits the high-atmosphere weather station CIRRUS, sending it and its crew hurtling up towards the edge of space. Virgil and Alan fly out in Thunderbird 2 to intercept the station, using Pod 2’s heli-flier to effect repairs; however, when Thunderbird 2 connects a cable to CIRRUS its systems get electrified, sending it falling out of control. Alan manages to return to the stricken Thunderbird 2 and restore its systems, but he and Virgil are forced to abandon their mission. Scott tries a high altitude jump from Thunderbird 1, dropping through a hurricane and onto the station; but he too gives up when the air becomes too thin for him to breathe. As CIRRUS reaches the upper atmosphere, the station’s balloons start to burst. Alan attempts a rescue in Thunderbird 3, but the ship’s tri-grapple fails to secure the station, forcing Alan to call off his mission. Having used up all their available options, it seems that International have met their match at last – and unless they can think of something else fast, the last of CIRRUS’ balloons will burst, sending the station and its crew plummeting back down to their deaths…
