Major seismic activity in the middle of the Aegean Sea uncovers a sunken city on the sea bed. When the World Council identifies the ruins as the Lost City of Atlantis, television explorer Francois Lemaire and his long-suffering wife Madeline take their luxury submarine <I>Jules Verne</I> to investigate. Ignoring the warnings from Lady Penelope, the World Council’s representative, the Lemaires get caught in a seaquake and buried under an ancient statue; with their air tanks punctured, Francois is forced to contact <I>International Rescue</I> for help. Virgil and Gordon blast off in <I>Thunderbird 2</I>, accompanied by Max and Brains, the latter braving seasickness in the hope of finding the legendary Solarkythera, believed to be the first ever computer. Arriving off the coast off Greece, <I>Thunderbird 2</I> deploys <I>Thunderbird 4</I>, which transports Gordon, Brains and Max down to the sea bed. However, as soon as Gordon has freed the <I>Jules Verne</I>, the ungrateful Lemaires speed off into the quake zone so that Francois can prove his mad theory that mer-people exist. Following the <I>Jules Verne</I> into the ruined Temple of the Gods, Gordon, Brains and Max surface into a breathable air pocket inside the building; they easily find the explorers – but then another seaquake causes half the building to come down, cutting them off from the two submarines with a wall of rubble. Luckily, John has sent Lady Penelope and Parker to help: <I>FAB 1</I> arrives on the scene and blasts a hole in the rubble. But then a huge aftershock brings down more of the building, trapping everyone inside the temple. Looking for a way out, Francois and Brains are amazed to discover a huge, clockwork mechanism – the fabled Solarkythera…
