'Inferno' by Benjamin Townsend |
Annoyed that a new skyscraper in Dubai has relegated London’s Crystal Spire to being the second tallest building in the world, billionaire architect Howard Yost decides to raise his “star-scraper” by seven metres using electro-jacks. The lifting operation is a success, but the Spire’s celebratory lightshow causes an electrical junction-box to catch fire – and soon the entire building is aflame. Fire Chief Cass McCready leads her Blue Watch team into the building, using fire-retardant gas-bombs to systematically extinguish the flames; but then the ceiling collapses, trapping one of the firemen under a mass of rubble. McCready takes up John Tracy’s offer of International Rescue’s help, and soon Thunderbird 2 arrives on the scene. While Virgil dons a fire-proof power-suit, Alan uses Thunderbird 2’s coolant jets to freeze a section of the Spire’s exterior; Virgil jumps across and shatters the metal, gaining access to the building’s interior. After rendezvousing with McCready, Virgil uses his power-suit to free the trapped fireman. With people still trapped on the Spire’s observation deck, Alan utilises Thunderbird 2’s sound system to blast away the oxygen feeding the fire, allowing Virgil and Blue Watch to enter the lift shaft and climb to the tower’s apex. But then the breaks on the elevator give out – sending the lift plummeting towards Virgil and the firemen…
