'Icarus' by Ben Townsend |
International Rescue make a guest appearance at the World Airshow, allowing the public a rare chance to see the Thunderbirds out on display on the high-altitude platform. After Lady Penelope introduces the Tracy boys and Kayo to a young boy called Tom, winner of the ‘Meet a Thunderbird’ competition, the team watch as Professor Kwark of Kwark Industries attempts to break the air-speed record in her high-velocity jet, Icarus. Kwark’s attempt is successful and the Icarus hits Mach 21, breaking the previous record held by Jeff Tracy - but then the aircraft’s controls malfunction, preventing the professor from slowing it down. Scott attempts to help the Icarus by using Thunderbird 1’s tow cable, but the resulting drag causes Kwark’s plane to become unstable. Tom and Virgil come up with an alternative plan, and by using Thunderbird 2’s water canon to spray water vapour across the Icarus’s path, they create a cloud-ramp that sends the stricken plane into space. Alan and Kayo follow in Thunderbird 3, but their attempt to use grappling arm fails when the Icarus starts to disintegrate. With her ship breaking apart and her air running out, Professor Kwark is forced to eject into space…
