'Fireflash' by Andrew Robinson |
With Brains working on upgrading Thunderbird F, Kayo has to travel home aboard the hypersonic airliner Fireflash. Unfortunately the plane is the latest target of the Hood, who wants to steal its new engines, recently improved by International Rescue’s resident genius. After taking the place of the real pilot, Captain Hanson, the Hood knocks out the co-pilot, gasses the passengers into unconsciousness and then hijacks the plane, hiding it from detection with the aid of a cloaking device. However, Kayo has noticed the course change, and her suspicions enable her to avoid being put to sleep. Once ‘Captain Hanson’ has left the cockpit, Kayo investigates and finds the villain’s wavelength disrupter connected to the airliner’s controls; deactivating the device allows her to contact John in Thunderbird 5, who quickly locates the missing plane. While the Tracy brothers set off in Thunderbirds 1 and 2, Kayo makes for the hold, where she encounters her villainous uncle. A fight ensues, and in the struggle the Hood damages the Fireflash’s fuel line, before fleeing in an escape pod. With the co-pilot still out cold Kayo has no option but to land the plane herself – only too aware that with the fuel spilling into the cargo hold, just one spark could blow the Fireflash sky high! Kayo tries to land on a disused airfield in the Gobi desert, but is forced to abort when two of the plane’s wheels malfunction. Alan and Gordon attempt to aid the plane’s landing using Thunderbird 2’s Elevator Cars, but the Fireflash is too heavy, sending the vehicles spinning out of control and forcing Kayo to abandon the landing once again. With the Fireflash’s fuel levels now at critical, International Rescue must come up with another way to land the airline – or else Kayo and everyone on board will die…
