'Deep Water' by Len Uhley |
The creators of Australia’s Supreme Barrier Reef, marine biologist Helen Shelby and her son Robby, are shocked to discover that something has turned the water surrounding the coral highly acidic. The corrosive water eats into the hull of their sub, forcing them to evacuate to the temporary safety of an underwater cabin located inside the coral reef. With their suits wrecked and air running out, Helen contacts International Rescue for help. Gordon Tracy immediately sets off in Thunderbird 4, calling on Lady Penelope and Parker for assistance, as they test run the new solar panels of the refitted ex-rigging mobile platform Ocean Dawn. Arriving at the reef, Gordon takes an aquascooter and spare oxygen helmets to the Shelbys, and together they manage to return to Thunderbird 4 just as the entire section of coral reef falls apart around them. Once the Ocean Dawn has arrived on the scene, the assembled team use the rig’s systems to locate the source of the pollution. With time running out before the entire reef is destroyed, Gordon navigates Thunderbird 4 along a current of clean water and soon finds the source of the contamination: a sunken cargo ship full of leaking containers. With Gordon unable to pull the damaged tanks free for fear of them breaking apart, Penelope sends down two of the Ocean Dawn’s air-lift bags to raise the cargo ship to the surface, where they can then freeze the harmful toxic chemicals. The airbags are deployed and the ship starts to rise – but then its hull cracks in two, and huge chunks of debris come crashing down on Gordon…
