'Breakdown' by Benjamin Townsend |
John in Thunderbird 5 receives a priority distress call from within the Arctic Circle, comprised of just one word: “Breakdown”. Virgil is sent away in Thunderbird 2 to investigate, unaware that the rest of his family and friends on Tracy Island are organising a secret birthday party for him. Arriving at the site of the transmission, Virgil finds a man lying by a beacon, near the opening to a deep tunnel; taking him back to Thunderbird 2, Virgil uses the hypochamber to thaw out the man, and then prepares to take him to the nearest medical station. Still curious as to where the man came from, Virgil asks John to check the area and learns that there are two more life signs two thousand metres below the ice. Virgil takes Pod 2’s Pod Explorer down into the tunnel, where he soon finds a broken down drilling vehicle lying in a huge ice chamber. However, when he tries to take the two occupants, Doctor Peck and Professor Goncharov, to safety they refuse to be rescued, insisting that he repair their drill so they can carry on their way. Virgil begins work on the engines, but then a tremor shakes the ice, causing the ceiling to partially collapse. Virgil insists on getting the scientists to the safety of Thunderbird 2, but the Pod Explorer can only take one passenger at a time, so he and Professor Goncharov return to the plane, promising to come back for Doctor Peck as soon as possible. However, when Virgil returns the Doctor has vanished, having gone deeper into the ice tunnels on foot. Setting off in pursuit, John eventually finds the doctor pinned to the ground under another ice fall, his foot broken. Doctor Peck explains that he has dedicated his life to curing his daughter’s illness, and his unauthorised mission has finally located a cure: ancient bacteria trapped within the ice. Virgil agrees to help the doctor retrieve the samples he needs to save his daughter – but time is running out, as the ice shelf is now collapsing all around them…
