Captain Kirk and the crew of the <I>U.S.S. Enterprise</I> are sent to the Gobi system to search for the <I> U.S.S. Pasteur</I>, which mysteriously disappeared eleven months ago. Identifying the only planet capable of supporting life, Kirk, Doctor McCoy, Ensign Mallard and Lieutenant O’Hara – the sister of the <I>Pasteur</I>’s missing captain – beam down to the surface to investigate, only to be knocked unconscious by a sonic weapon. Coming to, they find themselves inside a high-tech, underground warehouse, managed by a feminized robot named Avatar, who deals in a specialised form of merchandise: living babies, specifically made to order for use as soldiers and slaves. Kirk and his team are appalled – especially when they discover that the children contain traces of <I>human</I> DNA…
