The U.S.S. Enterprise is travelling to the Morgana Quadrant when a mysterious hole in space swallows the vessel. The phenomenon has no dimensions and is absent of all energy and matter except for an abandoned starship, adrift in the void. Commander Riker and Lieutenant Worf investigate the ship, only to be confounded by a series of inexplicable incidents. After the two officers return to the Enterprise, an enormous human eye appears on the bridge viewscreen, as a being called Nagilum peers into the ship. Nagilum informs Captain Picard that he is conducting an experiment into human life; he now wishes to use the crew of the Enterprise as human guinea pigs to study the many ways in which human beings can die...
