The U.S.S. Enterprise is en route to the planet Sarona VIII for shore leave when the crew inexplicably experiences a time-slip; a distress signal is then detected, originating from Vandor IV, the world where Doctor Paul Manheim has been conducting experiments in non-linear time. Answering the mayday, Captain Picard meets Doctor Manheim and his wife Jenice, the captain’s first love; Manheim reveals that his experiments caused the time distortion that the Enterprise experienced, and have also created a window into a totally new dimension. However, Manheim’s work is extremely dangerous: his interaction between the dimensions has damaged his brain’s neurochemistry - and unless Picard and Lieutenant Commander Data can find a way to seal the fissure into the other dimension, the very fabric of the galaxy will be torn apart…
