Investigating a looted Federation outpost, the crew of the <I>U.S.S. Enterprise</I> follows the trail to the planet Acamar III; here Captain Picard learns that the attack was carried out by the Gatherers, a renegade faction that broke away from Acamarian culture one-hundred years ago after centuries of battle with rival clans. Now that her people have a peaceful culture, the planet's leader, Maoruk, wishes to offer the Gatherers amnesty so that they can be reintegrated back into society; the captain offers to help locate the Gatherers, and the search soon leads to a camp located in the Hroni Cluster. The leader, Brull, agrees to meet with Marouk to discuss her proposal, but during the meeting Marouk's young servant Yuta murders Volnoth, an elderly Gatherer from the Lornack clan. Although Volnoth's death appears to be from a heart attack, Doctor Crusher discovers that he was killed by a micro virus that had been specifically created to prove fatal to his body's system. Brull is interested in the Acamarian leader's offer, but insists that they meet with the Gatherer chief, Chorgan, before a decision can be made. Unknown to them, Yuta is planning to murder the chief as vengeance for his clan's massacre of her clan, the Tralestas; Yuta's grandfather was the sole survivor of the attack, and he genetically altered his granddaughter's cells to make her touch fatal to the Lornacks...
