The U.S.S. Enterprise receives a distress signal from the Ficus Sector, where the planet Bringloidi is about to be destroyed by stellar flares. Commander Riker decides to beam the entire Bringloidi civilization aboard the ship, and soon the cargo hold is filled with two-hundred humans and animals, led by the friendly Danilo Odell and his beautiful, feisty daughter, Brenna; these farmers travelled from Earth many years ago with a second colony of humans, who then chose to move on to a different, unknown world on which to settle. When Captain Picard becomes concerned that this second colony may also be in danger, he instigates a search; the crew track the colonists to the planet Mariposa, only to learn that the entire population is composed of clones of the five crew members that survived the crash-landing. However, these clones are now suffering from a degenerative condition called Replicative Fading; they ask Picard and his crew to donate fresh D.N.A. so that new, stronger, clones can be made. But when their request is refused, the Mariposans render Commander Riker and Doctor Pulaski unconscious, extract cells from their bodies and then use them to make clones...
