The U.S.S. Enterprise receives an emergency distress call from the Federation supply ship U.S.S. Lantree. Making visual contact with the ship, Captain Picard and his crew are shocked to discover that the entire crew is dead; despite being in perfect health when examined eight weeks earlier, they have now all died of old age. Placing the Lantree under quarantine, Picard sets course for the vessel's last port of call, the Darwin Genetic Research Station, to warn its personnel of the danger; however, the Darwin Station has already become infected with the mysterious disease; the staff ask Picard to evacuate their children, who have been genetically-engineered to become super-specimens. The children are brought aboard the Enterprise and placed in isolation, and when they fail to display any sign of infection, Picard allows Pulaski to examine one of the boys as part of her research into the affliction. To ensure that the infection cannot come into contact with the crew, the doctor and the boy leave in a shuttlecraft - but soon Pulaski too falls victim to the disease, and she begins to rapidly age to death...
