The U.S.S. Enterprise receives a distress call from Rana IV, a remote Federation planet whose population is under attack. When an away team beams down to the surface they are shocked to discover that the planet has been obliterated and every one of the eleven-thousand inhabitants have been killed - except for a solitary, undamaged house containing two elderly survivors, Kevin and Rishon Uxbridge. However, the elderly couple cannot explain why they alone survived the destruction of their world, and refuse to leave their home. Meanwhile, Counselor Troi inexplicably begins to experience incessant music inside her mind, beating away at her senses and preventing her from reading the emotions of the Uxbridges. When the alien spaceship that previously attacked Rana IV returns to the planet and opens fire on the Enterprise, disabling its weapons systems, Captain Picard suspects that the warship somehow responded to the Uxbridges' wishes - but what is the connection, and are the elderly couple exactly all that they appear…?
