'Starship Mine' (Story Code 244) by Morgan Gendel

The U.S.S. Enterprise is docked at the Roemler Array, where the ship is to be subjected to a baryon sweep to remove any deadly particles that may have accumulated after its years of space travel. Because the sweep is fatal to living tissue, the ship is to be completely evacuated; the senior officers have been invited to a reception hosted by Commander Hutchinson, to be held at the Arkaria Base on the planet below. Captain Picard is the last to leave the Enterprise; returning to his quarters at the last minute to retrieve his horse saddle, he notices that one of the technicians is still aboard and working on a corridor panel; the man attacks him, but the captain is able to render his assailant unconscious. However, when he tries to reach the transporter room he is too late, and the power cuts off before he can leave the ship. The technician refuses to reveal his intentions, so Picard sedates him with a hypospray and takes his communicator; he makes his way through the corridors, but is soon captured by another of the hijackers and taken to meet their leader, Kelsey. At the reception, the host, station administrator Mister Orton, suddenly pulls a gun on his guests; as several other men bring their weapons to bear, Lieutenant LaForge is injured by phaser fire, while Commander Hutchinson is killed. Held hostage, Commander Riker, Counselor Troi, Lieutenant Commander Data and Doctor Crusher swiftly devise a plan to use LaForge’s VISOR to emit a hypersonic pulse, rendering everyone in the room unconscious except for Data. Back aboard the Enterprise, Picard pretends to be Mot, the hairdresser, and learns that the hijackers are after the trilithium resin from the ship’s engines. Creating a diversion with a hidden laser-bore, Picard destroys the field diverter intended to protect the hijackers from the impending baryon sweep, and then escapes into a Jeffries tube. A deadly game of hide-and-seek begins, but can the captain defeat the hijackers before the baryon sweep reaches him..?
