Wesley leaves for Starbase 515 in the Scylla Sector, in order to complete his Starfleet exams; he is grudgingly joined by Captain Picard, who has been ordered by Doctor Pulaski to undergo a heart replacement operation. Meanwhile, the <I>Enterprise</I> crew receives a distress call from the <I>Mondor</I>, whose crew of slow-witted Pakleds are unable to carry out the extensive repairs required. When Commander Riker sends Lieutenant Geordi LaForge across to help the lethargic aliens, Counselor Troi becomes concerned that the Pakleds are not telling the truth; LaForge completes the repairs, but the Pakleds then decide to hold him hostage, refusing to release him until Riker surrenders information from the <I>Enterprise</I>'s computer. However, Riker's attempt to outwit the Pakleds backfires, and the aliens, now believing that Geordi is a weapons expert, demand that he upgrade their defensive capabilities instead…
