'Relics' (Story Code 230) by Ronald D. Moore |

Detecting a distress call from the U.S.S. Jenolan, a vessel that disappeared seventy-five years ago, the U.S.S. Enterprise crew track the signal to its source - and discover a gigantic metal sphere, two-hundred-million kilometres in diameter, which completely surrounds a star. Lieutenant Commander Data confirms that the structure is the first known Dyson sphere, a feat of engineering that can harness the entire radiant energy output of a star for use by the inhabitants who live on the inner surface of the sphere. Detecting the crashed wreckage of the Jenolan on the outer surface, Commander Riker, Lieutenant LaForge and Lieutenant Worf beam across to investigate; they discover that the ship’s transporter has been jury-rigged, and still contains two life-patterns inside the pattern buffer; LaForge initiates the transporter process - and the legendary Captain Montgomery Scott rematerialises in front of them. Scotty immediately attempts to retrieve his crewmate, Franklin, from the transporter, only to learn that their pattern has degraded beyond rescue. The engineer’s elation at being saved by the Enterprise soon turns to shock, as he learns that this is not the vessel on which he served seventy-five years ago. He explains that the Jenolan was en route to the Norpan colony when a warp failure led to them finding the Dyson sphere; they decided to explore, but then the aft warp coil exploded and sent the ship smashing into the sphere, killing everyone but the quick-thinking Scotty and Franklin. LaForge accompanies Scotty back to the Enterprise, where the engineer is quickly overwhelmed at the display of Twenty-Fourth Century technology. After Doctor Crusher examines Scotty she confines him to quarters for some rest, but the engineer becomes restless and heads for Engineering to offer his services to LaForge; however, LaForge soon becomes exasperated by Scotty’s recounting of old adventures, and he remarks that the aging engineer is in the way. Depressed, Scotty returns to his quarters; it seems that he is a man out of time, and he has no idea how to face the new world in which he finds himself…
