'Q Who' (Story Code 142) by Maurice Hurley

The omnipotent, extra dimensional being known as Q appears on the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise and asks Captain Picard to become a member of the crew. But when Picard refuses, the enraged Q sends the ship hurtling off into a distant, unexplored part of the galaxy; here the Enterprise crew encounters a mysterious, cuboid spacecraft, and then two cybernetic beings appear in Main Engineering and begin draining information from the ship's computers. These part-organic, part-machine aliens are members of the Borg, a collective race that captures members of other species and then assimilates them into their number. Having determined the Enterprise defensive capabilities, the Borg vessel then demands the immediate surrender of the crew, so that they too can be added to the Borg Collective...
