Lieutenant Commander Data experiences his first nightmare: finding himself in the U.S.S. Enterprise corridors, he hears a telephone ringing; but when he goes to investigate, he is attacked and torn to pieces by a group of workmen. The next day, while working on the installation of a new warp core, Data tells Lieutenant LaForge about his dream, which the engineer attributes to a new level in his dream program. Captain Picard and Commander Riker arrive to supervise the activation of the core, but when the drive is engaged, the power fails, and the ship stalls. Later, Counselor Troi visits Data to discuss his nightmare, and urges him not to run from dark imagery, but to experience it. Data soon dreams once more; he is in Ten-Forward, where Lieutenant Worf eats a piece of cellular peptide cake with mint frosting - actually a half-woman, half-cake version of Troi; at the bar, Doctor Crusher drinks from a straw attached to Riker's head; the same telephone ringing can be heard, and the workmen are also present… Data is then woken up by Troi, and learns that he has overslept. He runs three complete self-diagnostics, but can find no explanation for his nightmares. While work on the warp coil continues to be plagued with problems, Data experiences another dream: he sees a mouth on LaForge’s neck, and when he answers a telephone in his chest, he hears Sigmund Freud telling him to “kill them all”. Later, while following Troi into a turbolift, Data suddenly stabs her in the shoulder with a coil brace; explaining his actions to the captain and senior staff, he reports that he saw the image of a mouth on Troi's shoulder. However, his dream program has now been turned off; LaForge proposes conducting a sub-polymer scan of the android, while Picard orders him confined to quarters. Doctor Crusher finds an interphasic rash on Troi's shoulder near her stab wound; examining Troi with an interphasic scanner, she is shocked to discover that she and the crew are covered with strange, leech-like creatures...
