Lieutenant Commander Data decides to further his creator's work by constructing a new android, which he names Lal. Captain Picard is concerned for Starfleet's reaction to Data’s unauthorised experiment, but agrees to allow his science officer to continue with his intriguing experiment. When Data gives Lal the opportunity to choose its own appearance, the mechanoid decides on the form of a human female; over the next few days, under Data’s supervision, Lal’s knowledge and perception of her surroundings increases, and it is not long before her ‘father’ decides to enrol her in school so that she can better understand human behaviour. However, Lal finds it difficult to fit in with the children, and so Guinan agrees to supervise her, letting her work behind the bar in Ten Forward so that she can study the many different people aboard the ship. Meanwhile, Admiral Haftel learns of Lal’s existence and informs Picard that he wishes to transfer the android to a research station so that her progress can be closely monitored. When Picard refuses, stating that Lal needs to stay with her ‘father’ so that she develops fully, Haftel comes aboard the Enterprise to observe the young android - empowered to remove her if he is dissatisfied by what he sees…
