The U.S.S. Enterprise is en route to the planet Bilana III to take part in the testing of a new propulsion method called the Soliton Wave. Lieutenant Worf receives an unexpected visit from his mother Helena and his son Alexander, who informs him that he has decided to live on the ship with his father. Learning that Alexander has been misbehaving and is in desperate need of his guidance, Worf reluctantly agrees to take custody of his son; but when he sends Alexander to the school on board the Enterprise, the boy soon begins lying, and when he plays up on a trip to the Biolab, Worf is prompted to threaten to send him to a Klingon school instead. However, when Counselor Troi realises that Alexander's behaviour stems from feeling abandoned by his father and late mother, Worf is forced to rethink his plans. Meanwhile, the testing of the Soliton Wave commences, but the wave's power level increases so drastically that it jeopardises the safety of a nearby colony. The crew work frantically to create a backfire effect to dissipate the wave and save the planet, but a fire breaks out in the Biolab – and Alexander is trapped inside…
