While Captain Picard returns from a Federation conference, the <I>U.S.S. Enterprise</I> detects a disabled Earth satellite dating back to the Twentieth century; inside are found the perfectly preserved bodies of three people, held in suspended animation inside cryogenic chambers. Picard returns to the ship and informs his crew that they have been ordered to the outskirts of the Neutral Zone; two Federation outposts have recently been destroyed, and it is suspected that the Romulans may be responsible as a prelude to war, despite their being unheard from in seventy-five years. After Lieutenant Commander Data brings the three bodies aboard, Doctor Beverly Crusher is able to revive them, and soon a housewife, a businessman and an entertainer are exploring the wonders of their new surroundings, and coming to terms with three-hundred years of change. When the <I>Enterprise</I> arrives at the Neutral Zone, the crew discovers that the Federation stations have inexplicably vanished; the ship then comes face-to-face with a Romulan vessel , but the commander insists that his people did not destroy the outposts - instead, they are actually investigating the loss of several of their own stations...
