Crew evaluations are in progress on the U.S.S. Enterprise, causing concern for four junior officers, Nurse Alyssa Ogawa; Ensign Sam Lavelle; Ensign Sito Jaxa, a Bajoran; and Ensign Taurik, a Vulcan. While the four friends meet in Ten Forward, Commander Riker and Counselor Troi discuss candidates for the Ops position on a certain shift; when both Sito's and Lavelle's names are mentioned, Ben, a waiter, passes the information along to his friends, causing even more tension amongst the group. Later that day, Lavelle and Sito take part in a stations drill, but Sito makes a mistake, much to her annoyance; in Engineering, Taurik fails to impress Lieutenant LaForge with his new computer simulation; while in Sickbay, Ogawa is pleased to learn from Doctor Crusher that she is to be recommended for promotion. Some time later, the Enterprise arrives in the Argaya system and takes up a waiting position; an escape pod is eventually detected, but it lies fifty-thousand kilometres inside Cardassian space. While Captain Picard and his senior officers work on a way to retrieve the occupant without crossing the border, the Engineering team attempt to improve the range of the transporter system; however, when Taurik tries to identify the life form inside, he is ordered to stop by LaForge; and as Sickbay prepares to receive the unidentified occupant, Ogawa is told to leave by Doctor Crusher. The four friends are both intrigued and worried over the strange events, and they speculate on what could be happening. They have no way of foretelling that these mysterious events will lead to the death of one of their number…
