'Legacy' (Story Code 180) by Joe Menosky

The U.S.S. Enterprise crew respond to a distress call from a Federation freighter in orbit around Turkana IV, the planet where their late crewmate Tasha Yar was born. The freighter explodes, but an escape pod is detected heading toward the surface. Beaming down with an away team, Commander Riker meets Hayne, leader of the Coalition, one of the planet's two warring factions; on learning from Lieutenant Commander Data that Tasha was born on his world, Hayne offers to help search for the survivors, together with his comrade, Ishara Yar - Tasha's sister. Captain Picard warily accepts Hayne’s offer, and Ishara is brought aboard the Enterprise to discuss rescue options. The crew then receive a transmission from one of the missing crew members, who are being held hostage by the Alliance, the other faction on Turkana IV; Ishara reveals the location of the escape pod, informing Picard that as part of a peacekeeping agreement, members of the Alliance and the Coalition were been implanted with detectors that trigger alarms if they enter the others’ territory. Riker and Ishara attempt a rescue mission, but they are quickly detected by the Alliance; Ishara is wounded, and she and Riker only just manage to return to the ship. Recovering from her injury, lshara and Data soon become good friends - but can Ishara really be trusted, or does she have another, more deadly agenda..?
