The U.S.S. Enterprise encounters an alien probe, which quickly matches the vessel's course and speed; the device then emits a stream of nucleonic particles, which penetrate the ship's shields and render Captain Picard unconscious. When the captain comes to, he finds himself in strange surroundings with an attractive woman named Eline; to his amazement, she tells him that his name is Kamin, and that he is her husband of three years; she goes on to explain that he has been ill for a week, and must be experiencing memory loss. Leaving the house, Picard learns that he is in the village of Ressis on the planet Kataan, where he works as a simple iron weaver, and enjoys playing the flute; he also notices that the necklace around Eline's neck is an exact replica of the alien probe. Meanwhile aboard the Enterprise the crew is unable to revive their captain; they are unwilling to stop the particle emission that has become attached to him in case they kill him. Despite only a matter of minutes passing on the ship, five years have now passed on Kataan; Picard has now settled into his life as Kamin, although his advanced ideas for solving the drought that is destroying the planet are laughed at by his 'old friend' Council Leader Batai. The Enterprise crew learn that blocking the beam only causes Picard's pulse to drop dramatically, forcing them to restore the connection. Back on Kataan, more years have passed; Kamin now has two children, Meribor and the new-born Batai, named after Kamin's late friend. However, as the years continue to pass, Kamin watches as the drought worsens, and the planet seems doomed. On the Enterprise, Lieutenant LaForge and Lieutenant Commander Data trace the probe's radiation to Kataan, a planet that was destroyed in a supernova explosion over a thousand years ago...
