Lieutenant Geordi LaForge learns from his friend, Susanna Leijten, that they are the only surviving members of an away team that visited the planet Tarchannen III five years ago, while investigating the mysterious disappearance of several personnel. With the information that one of their former colleagues stole a shuttlecraft and returned to the planet, LaForge asks Captain Picard for help in solving the mystery; the captain agrees, and the <I>U.S.S. Enterprise</I> soon arrives at Tarchannen III, where the missing shuttlecraft is discovered, along with two others. After LaForge and Susanna find two torn Starfleet uniforms, Susanna senses the presence of the others nearby; she tries to run into the darkness, but is stopped by LaForge, who quickly beams her back to the ship when she becomes uncontrollable. Doctor Beverly Crusher examines the woman and discovers that her blood chemistry has been altered; Susanna realises that whatever happened to her former colleagues is now happening to her, and may soon affect LaForge. Then, when Susanna's skin becomes covered with strange blotches and her two middle-fingers fuse together, Beverly concludes that she is transforming into another species; Picard gives the order to closely monitor LaForge in case he should also change and attempt to return to the surface. LaForge heads to the holodeck to three-dimensionally recreate a visual recording made at the site of the original investigation, in an attempt to determine the origin of an unidentified shadow. But before he can complete his examination, LaForge discovers that his body has also begun to transform…
