Aboard the <I>U.S.S. Enterprise</I>, Lieutenant Geordi LaForge is having difficulties with one of his engineers, the awkward and shy Lieutenant Reginald Barclay. After instructing him to investigate a malfunctioning anti-gravity unit, LaForge is annoyed when, despite Barclay's claims of being unable to find a problem, the anti-gravity field promptly fails and a canister of alien tissue samples breaks open, exposing its contents. But when LaForge complains to Picard, the captain advises him to find a way to motivate the engineer; however, despite LaForge’s best efforts Barclay still makes a mess of things and proves unpopular with the crew; when Picard inadvertently calls him by the nickname of "Broccoli", Barclay soon retreats to the fantasy world of the holodeck, venting his frustrations by running programs in which he is seduced by Counselor Deanna Troi, or sword fighting in swashbuckling duels with Picard, LaForge and Lieutenant Commander Data. Despite LaForge's encouragement to visit Counselor Troi concerning his obsession with the holodeck, Barclay continues to shirk his responsibilities. But when the <I>Enterprise</I> suddenly increases in warp speed, LaForge must turn to Barclay for help - before the rapidly accelerating starship automatically self-destructs in a matter of minutes...
