When the crew of the <I>U.S.S. Enterprise</I> detects strange energy readings on Alfa Onias III, an uninhabited planet near the Neutral Zone, Captain Picard suspects that the Romulans may be involved. Commander Riker takes an away team down to the surface to investigate, but communications break down and the mission is aborted. However, Riker then comes to and finds himself in sickbay - sixteen years later. A grey-haired Doctor Crusher tells him that he has just recovered from a retroactive virus that he contracted on Alfa Onias III, which has only recently become active and which destroyed all his memories from the moment he was infected. Riker’s is amazed to learn that he has been captain of the <I>Enterprise</I> for nine years, has a son by a wife who has been dead for two years - and is now due to conduct important peace negotiations between the Federation and the Romulans. But Riker’s suspicions are raised when he realises that Tomalak, the Romulan ambassador that they are escorting to Outpost 23, is an enemy Romulan captain that he once encountered, and his doubts increase when he discovers that his late wife was Minuet, a woman he once created while on the Holodeck…
