Captain Picard informs Ensign Wesley Crusher that he has been accepted to Starfleet Academy, and then requests that the young man accompany him on a last mission to mediate in a dispute on the planet Pentarus V. The U.S.S. Enterprise heads for a nearby planet, where an ancient waste vessel is leaking deadly radiation into its atmosphere; meanwhile, Picard and Wesley accompany Dirgo, an inhabitant of Pentarus V, in his rundown space shuttle. However, the shuttle malfunctions, forcing them to make an emergency crash landing on a desert moon. Learning that Dirgo has no water, Picard leaves a sign in the sand and then leads then towards the shelter of a mountain range; here Wesley locates a cavern containing a water fountain protected by a force-field; Dirgo impatiently fires at the field, but then an electrical sentry appears and approaches them. When Dirgo fires at it he causes a rock slide; Picard pushes Wesley out of the way, but receives severe injuries from the falling boulders. As Picard’s condition deteriorates, Dirgo attempts to shoot through the force field so that he can reach the water, but the sentry splits into two, envelopes Wesley's weapon and then kills Dirgo. As the cold night falls Wesley can only look on as the Captain slips closer to death…
