Having prevented the recent Borg attack on Earth, the U.S.S. Enterprise undergoes repairs in a spacedock orbiting the planet. While the crew take shore leave to be with their families, Captain Picard, recovering from the harrowing ordeal of being converted into one of the Borg, decides to return for the first time in twenty years to the French village where he grew up. But although his sister-in-law and nephew, both of whom he has never met before, give him a warm welcome, Picard’s older brother, Robert, greets him with anger and hostility. Back aboard the Enterprise, Lieutenant Worf receives as unexpected visit by his adoptive human parents, Sergey and Helena Rozhenko, but finds himself uncomfortable with their displays of emotion, upsetting Helena with his coldness. Meanwhile, Doctor Crusher receives a package that she left in storage when leaving Earth, and finds inside it a computer disc with a holographic message for Wesley from his late father, made when the boy was just ten weeks old. Back in France, Picard meets an old friend, who offers him the opportunity to head an intriguing new project - and Picard find himself seriously considering giving up his captaincy in order to take it…
