When an unidentified ship approaches and scans the <I>U.S.S. Enterprise</I>, the entire crew suddenly experiences complete memory loss. As Captain Picard, Commander Riker and the rest of the crew struggle desperately to recall their identities, they find that they still have the necessary basic skills to operate the ship. While Worf objects to the choice of Picard as possible captain, Lieutenant LaForge and Ensign Ro decide that the wreckage detected outside the ship must be the remains of whatever vessel caused their predicament. Riker and Ro head off to check on the crew, and soon find Lieutenant Commander Data working as a barman in Ten-Forward. Picard and the others access the ship's computer, and obtain the name, rank and image of the personnel responsible for primary operation of the ship, including the second-in-command, Executive Officer Commander Keiran MacDuff. Later, Picard holds a meeting of the senior officers to discuss their situation: they now know that the ship is called the <I>Enterprise</I>, they are part of the United Federation of Planets, and that the Federation has been at war with the Lysian Alliance for years. It seems that a new Lysian weapon, which has already resulted in the capture of over a dozen Federation ships, is responsible for their memory loss, and is turning the tide of the war. Picard informs his crew that their mission is to enter Lysian space and destroy the Lysian central command…
