The U.S.S. Enterprise receives a distress call from the U.S.S. Yamato; while travelling to the planet Iconia the vessel suffered inexplicable malfunctions, and it now lies adrift in the Neutral Zone. However, shortly after Captain Picard makes contact with the ship, it explodes; investigation of the Yamato's logs shows that it recently encountered a probe from the extinct Iconian civilisation; the craft transmitted a computer virus that rewrote the ship's systems, causing an antimatter containment failure. Unfortunately, by downloading the Yamato's records, the Enterprise computer has also been infected. In an attempt to find a way to save the ship, Picard, Lieutenant Commander Data and Lieutenant Worf beam down to the surface of Iconia, where they discover an Iconian outpost containing a portal that allows instant transportation to distant locations, both on- and off-world. Meanwhile, a Romulan vessel appears in orbit and orders the Enterprise to leave the Neutral Zone; it then proceeds to open fire on the defenceless Federation starship...
