The <I>U.S.S. Enterprise</I> arrives at Relva VII, where Wesley is to take the Starfleet Academy entrance exam. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Commander Dexter Remmick, acting under the orders of Captain Picard’s old friend, Admiral Gregory Quinn, begins an inquiry into the captain’s competence in command; unaware of the reason for the investigation, Picard and his crew must comply with Remmick’s questioning. Remmick is impressed when Picard handles a difficult situation: Jake Kurland, a young crewmember upset at failing to qualify for the Academy entrance exam, steals a shuttlecraft and heads out into space; but the craft immediately develops a major malfunction, and only the captain’s confidence is able to calm the panicking boy enough to enable him to pilot the shuttle back to safety. Having completed his inquiry, Remmick reports to the Admiral that he is unable to find any flaws in the captain's ability to command; Quinn then informs Picard that he has proven himself worthy of the prestigious post as Commandant of Starfleet Academy, even hinting at his promotion to admiral. Will Picard give up the <I>Enterprise</I> and accept the post, - and will Wesley qualify for entrance for the Academy...?
