The <I>U.S.S. Enterprise</I> is heading for a mysterious planet when it passes through a wormhole in space, which renders everyone except Lieutenant Commander Data unconscious. When the crew comes round, Data informs Captain Picard that he and the others were knocked out for just thirty seconds; however, Commander Riker notes that the ship's instruments indicate that an entire day has passed, although Picard puts the discrepancy down to the effects of wormhole. Data convinces his commanding officers not to investigate the planet, suggesting that they send a probe instead; but when the probe reaches the planet its readings also show discrepancies. Meanwhile, Doctor Crusher finds that one of her experiments shows a full day's growth; she informs Picard, who immediately becomes concerned that Data may be lying to them. When an investigation is carried out without the android’s knowledge, Lieutenant LaForge discovers that Data has reset the ship's chronometer; Picard orders an examination of Data’s systems, but LaForge is unable to find any malfunction. Other strange events occur: Couselor Troi sees a frightening reflection of herself that suggests an alien creature inhabits her body, and Doctor Crusher discovers that Lieutenant Worf sustained a broken wrist, but it has been reset and treated during the time he was supposedly unconscious. Picard’s uneasiness increases; Data is definitely lying to his crewmates - but why?
