The U.S.S. Enterprise detects a signal from an ancient Promellian battlecruiser, which has been drifting in space for over a thousand years. But when Captain Picard and his crew attempt to discover what happened to the crew of the cruiser, the Enterprise becomes affected by a rapidly-increasing energy drain and is trapped in a holding pattern; the crew begin to suffer from radiation bombardment, and raising the ship’s protective shields only drains more power. Lieutenant LaForge predicts that all of the ship's power will be depleted in just three hours, at which point the entire crew will succumb to the lethal effects of the radiation. Desperately searching for a way to save the ship, Geordi heads for the holodeck and enlists the holographic assistance of Doctor Leah Brahms, a beautiful young engineering expert; meanwhile, Commander Riker and Lieutenant Commander Data return to the Promellian battlecruiser to search through the ship's logs. They discover that during the centuries-old battle between the Menthars and Promellians, the Menthars used Aceton assimilators - devices that attract energy and then convert it into radiation - to trap their enemy in a booby trap; when the Promellians attempted to escape, they unknowingly supplied the power for their own destruction. The Enterprise is now trapped in the same booby trap - and time is rapidly running out for all aboard the vessel…
