Lieutenant Worf has been imprisoned in a Romulan prison camp, and has learned from the Klingon inmates that his father, Mogh, is truly dead. Worf’s sense of honour is unable to comprehend how the captives can live in disgrace as prisoners; the two leaders, L'Kor and Gi'ral, explain that after they were captured at Khitomer, the Romulans stopped them from committing ritual suicide, forcing them to remain in the camp to preserve the honour of their families, who believe that they died heroically.
Worf meets with the Romulan leader, Tokath, and learns that not only are the Romulans living in harmony with the Klingons, but that Tokath has married a Klingon woman; when Worf registers his shock at this revelation, Tokath warns him not to cause dissent amongst the community. However, Worf soon attempts to escape, only to be stopped by a fellow Klingon named Toq; he is taken before Tokath and injected with a device that will enable the guards to track him, and then placed in the charge of Toq. Meanwhile, aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, Captain Picard and his officers are concerned that their comrade is overdue for his return; they decide to track down the trader to learn Worf’s destination. Back in the camp, Worf finds his incarceration frustrating; he decides to take a different approach: to make his people aware of their Klingon heritage by educating the children. He teaches them meditation exercises, shows them old artefacts, and recounts the ancient Klingon legends. Worf finds himself drawn to a beautiful Klingon girl named Ba'el - until he sees her pointed Romulan ears, and realises that she is Tokath’s daughter...
