The U.S.S. Enterprise is docked at Deep Space Nine to assist the Bajorans with aqueduct repairs, a result of the Cardassian occupation. While on the space station, Lieutenant Worf is approached by a Yridian named Jaglom Shrek, who claims that the Klingon’s father, Mogh, did not die at Khitomer twenty-five years ago, but in fact survived the massacre and was taken by the Romulans to a remote prison camp; Shrek offers to divulge the location of the site for the right price, but Worf refuses to believe him, angrily stating that a Klingon would rather die with honour than live as a prisoner. Worf returns to the Enterprise, where his rage is soon noticed by Counselor Troi; she suggests that Worf's doubts over the honour of his father could be resolved if he were to personally verify Shrek’s story. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Commander Data, Lieutenant LaForge, and DS9’s Doctor Bashir examine an old field generator found in the Gamma Quadrant; the final power connections are made to the dilithium chamber, but when LaForge activates the device it sends out an energy arc that knocks Data off his feet; the android finds himself in a surreal vision, in which he walks along a corridor and encounters a blacksmith working at an anvil, and with surprise sees that the smith’s face is that of a young Doctor Noonien Soong - his creator. After ‘waking up’ in Engineering, Data attempts to interpret his vision by referring to images from other cultures, but when Captain Picard advises him to determine what it means to him personally, he decides to paint a picture of his dream; he returns to his quarters and begins to paint -and paint, and paint… Meanwhile, Worf obtains the location of the prison camp from Shrek; he journeys to the Carraya Sector and lands on a planet covered with dense jungle. He then sets off on the long, gruelling trek to find his father…
