Captain Picard has been captured by the Borg and transformed into a half-human half-cybernetic being named Locutus. Realising that the Borg have assimilated his extensive knowledge of the U.S.S. Enterprise, its crew, and Starfleet’s strategy for the defence of Earth against the Borg attack, Commander Riker has no choice but to give the order to open fire on the Borg vessel. The Enterprise is able to escape from the Biorg cube, but at the cost of its captain. With the loss of Picard to the enemy, Fleet Admiral Hanson promotes Riker to the rank of captain; although Riker finds his promotion painful and difficult, he agrees to take the promotion, naming the ambitious and unlikeable Lieutenant Commander Shelby as his First Officer. The Enterprise heads for a rendezvous with Starfleet, but en route the ship passes through a graveyard of dozens of wrecked and lifeless Starfleet vessels - the Borg are on their way to attack Earth…
