'Attached' (Story Code 260) by Nicholas Sagan

The U.S.S. Enterprise visits Kesprytt III, where one of the planet’s societies, the Kes, is to be evaluated for possible membership into the Federation. Captain Picard and Doctor Crusher beam down to the surface, but the transporter beam is diverted, and they find themselves trapped in a prison run by the isolationist Prytt; here Minister Lorin accuses them of conspiring to form a military alliance with the Kes, and promises them that neural implants in their necks will soon elicit the truth. Meanwhile, Commander Riker turns to ambassador Mauric of the Kes to help locate his missing comrades. In the prison, Picard and Beverly receive a tray of food passed into their cell; hidden in it is Beverly’s tricorder, with a map added to its directory; the two officers manage to escape, and then follow the map through a maze of hazardous caverns. Riker attempts to contact the Prytt, but the connection suddenly drops; Lorin then contacts the Enterprise, refuses to discuss Picard and Beverly, and threatens to attack the ship unless attempts at contacting the Prytt are ceased. Learning of this, Mauric reassures Riker with the information that Picard and Beverly have been released by a Kes operative, and are now heading for the Kes border. Meanwhile, Picard and Beverly discover that their implants prevent them from separating, inducing waves of nausea if they move a scant few metres apart - and also allow them to read each other's minds. As they share each other's hidden thoughts and fears, it is not long before Picard reveals that he was once in love with Beverly…
