Relaxing in his quarters aboard the <I>U.S.S. Enterprise</I>, Captain Picard is suddenly abducted by an alien energy beam and transported to a secure chamber. Also imprisoned with him are Tholl, a pacifist Mizarian; an Algolian named Haro, also a Starfleet Academy cadet; and the bestial Esoqq, of the Chalnoth race. Mistrust amongst the prisoners quickly begins when they discover that their food supply is poisonous to Esoqq; then, when Picard, Esoqq and Haro attempt to rewire the door control, they are struck by an energy bolt. It is not long before the four begin to suspect each other, believing that one of their number may actually be their captor. Meanwhile, on board the <I>Enterprise</I>, a false Captain Picard has taken over command of the ship; however, he soon arouses the suspicions of the crew by acting strangely, ordering the ship off-course, singing drinking songs in Ten Forward and making romantic overtures to Doctor Beverly Crusher. Can the real Picard determine the purpose behind his abduction and find a way to return to his vessel..?
