'Short Trips': 'Soul Music' (1 Part) by Victoria Saxon |
Beneath Las Vegas, a strange virus starts spreading amongst the Muhadisian people of the City of Hidden Tunnels. Their leader, Amaso, turns to his old friend the Doctor for help. After learning that the infected are chanting “I miss home”, the Doctor hears music that only he can hear; he tracks the melody with his sonic screwdriver, leading Amaso through his city and up into the streets of Vegas until they eventually arrive at the edge of a lake, the site of a light, music and water display for tourists. As a storm whips up, the Doctor identifies the source of the music that is making the Muhadisians ill: a diminutive violinist, playing a mournful melody that elicits a feeling of homesickness. When the Doctor identifies him as an alien Vitulian, the depressed violinist explains that he was exiled to Earth for marrying out of his class. The Doctor explains how the music is causing chaos, infecting the Muhadisians, and whipping up a storm throughout Las Vegas. Promising to take the violinist home in the TARDIS, the Doctor alters the settings on the violin, allowing the alien to play a healing tune of hope. With the Muhadisians cured, the Doctor takes the violinist home...
