“I’m the Doctor” – the Doctor
As medical student Martha Jones makes her way to work at the Royal Hope Hospital, she fields several phone calls from her family, bumps into a strange man dressed in a blue suit, and sees a suspicious looking black-clad motorcycle courier. During her morning rounds, Martha sees the same courier, now joined by a second, and once again meets the suited man – a patient named John Smith, who is suffering from severe abdominal pains. Smith is surprised to hear that Martha met him that morning, particularly as he has been in bed all night; Martha too is surprised, as Smith appears to have two separate heartbeats… The staff at the Royal Hope all experience strong static shocks, and then a violent thuderstorm breaks out overhead - however, the clouds are only situated above the hospital. When the rain suddenly begins falling upwards the building becomes rocked by violent tremors; when the shaking subsides, Martha and her colleague, Julia, are amazed to discover that the Royal Hope Hospital has somehow been transported to the surface of the moon. As panic breaks out amongst the staff and patients, level-headed Martha ponders why the air is not leaking out of the building’s ill-fitting windows; she and Julia are then joined by Mr Smith, now fully dressed in a blue suit and equally as interested in their predicament as they are. After Smith introduces himself as “The Doctor”, Martha attributes their situation down to aliens, recalling recent examples of alien events, particularly the battle at Canary Wharf, in which Cybermen killed her cousin, Adeola. The Doctor’s demonstration that a force field is keeping the air inside the hospital is interrupted by the arrival of three huge, cylindrical spaceships, which mark the arrival of a platoon of Judoon storm troopers. Elsewhere, the hospital administrator, Mr Stoker, receives a visit from the two black-clad couriers and their mistress, an elderly patient named Florence Finnegan; as her minions grab Stoker, Florence pulls out a straw and begins drinking the man’s blood… The Judoon arrive inside the hospital and assimilate the English language from one of the doctors; as they begin scanning and cataloguing everyone inside, the Doctor tells Martha that the rhino-faced troopers are a race of mercenary police who have used an H20 scoop to transport the hospital to the moon’s neutral territory in order to locate and arrest a non-human – something that spells bad news for him, as he too is an extraterrestrial. As an incredulous Martha listens on, the Doctor reveals that he was posing as a patient so that he could investigate suspicious plasma readings at the hospital. The Doctor’s attempts to use the hospital computers prove fruitless, as the Judoon have wiped all records from the servers. One of the couriers appears and chases the Doctor and Martha through the hospital, pursuing them down several corridors before cornering them in an X-ray room; however, the Doctor uses his sonic screwdriver to boost the X-ray machine, killing the courier with a lethal dose, but destroying his gadget in the process; examining the corpse, the Doctor determines that the courier is in fact a ‘Slab’ – a basic slave drone comprised solely of animated leather. The Judoon find Florence, but the blood she has assimilated from Stoker causes her to register as human; however, the troopers’ scanner detects the Doctor’s alien biology, and they give chase. As the oxygen in the building begins to run out, the Doctor and Martha run for their lives, making for the administrator’s office, where they find Stoker’s corpse, totally drained of blood. Realising that an alien Plasmavore is loose in the hospital, the Doctor concludes that the creature will be heading for the MRI room; he kisses Martha and then sets off in pursuit, only to be captured by the second Slab. While the Judoon are distracted by traces of the Doctor on Martha’s lips, the Time Lord feigns ignorance, pretending to be an innocent patient in order to trick Florence into revealing her plan: she is increasing the output of the MRI equipment in order to send out a magnetic pulse that will fry the brain stem of everyone on the moon and on the side of the Earth that faces it; in the ensuing confusion, the Plasmavore will then steal one of the Judoon ships and make her escape. As the Slab holds down the Doctor, Florence begins drinking his blood… The Judoon troops and Martha arrive on the scene; shocked to find the Doctor’s lifeless body, Martha convinces the Judoon captain to re-scan Florence, and when the Time Lord’s blood gives off an alien reading, the Judoon captain charges the old lady with the murder of the child princess of the planet Patroval Regency IX, and then executes both the Plasmavore and her lackey. With their mission completed, the Judoon evacuate the building and return to their ships, apparently leaving the humans to their fate. Martha uses double-CPR to resuscitate the Doctor, only to collapse from oxygen starvation. In the nick of time, the Doctor manages to shut down the MRI scanner, and as the last of the oxygen runs out, the Judoon return the Royal Hope back to its rightful place on Earth. A short time later, as the emergency services see to everyone in the building, Martha glimpses the Doctor, but he disappears, apparently into thin air. Later that day, Martha goes out to her brother's twenty-first birthday drink with the rest of her dysfunctional family, but the evening is ruined by an argument between her mother, her father, and her father’s new girlfriend. When Martha sees the Doctor again she follows him to his TARDIS – a police box that can supposedly travel through space and time; Martha is scornful, until the Doctor demonstrates his ship’s ability by nipping back in time so that he can bump into her earlier. When the Doctor then offers her a trip in his vessel as a thank-you, Martha agrees – and off they go...
