Belinda and the Doctor

“The planet Missbelindachandra One will celebrate your wedding!” - Robot 1

17 years ago: Belinda Chandra spends her birthday night sitting under a starlit sky with her boyfriend Alan; he gives her an unusual gift: a diploma certificate for a star named in her honour -‘Miss Belinda Chandra’...

17 years later: A mysterious light speeds away from the Missbelindachandra star, as the TARDIS materialises outside the hospital where Belinda now works as a nurse. The Doctor urgently searches for Belinda, but misses her when she goes home to her flatshare. That night, Belinda’s sleep is rudely interrupted by the arrival of a spaceship on her lawn. Its occupants, two large red robots, blast into Belinda’s house in their search for their queen: Miss Belinda Chandra! After taking her star diploma from its wall frame, the robots lead Belinda outside at gunpoint. As Belinda’s neighbour - none other than Mrs Flood - looks on, the robots teleport into the spaceship with their captive. When the Doctor arrives on the scene, Mrs Flood scurries to remain away unseen, leaving the Doctor to watch helplessly as the spaceship carrying Belinda blasts into the sky... Inside the ship, Belinda tries to appeal to her kidnappers, telling them to look for her ex-boyfriend, Alan, who bought her the star. Looking out a viewport, Belinda is surprised to see a blue police box in pursuit - but then time distorts, and Belinda experiences the last few seconds again. Inside the TARDIS, the Doctor experiences the same time distortion… The robots take Belinda to their homeworld, Missbelindachandra One. Here Belinda is greeted by a woman named Sacha 55, who explains that the planet is in turmoil, its robot overlords fighting off an uprising by human rebels. Belinda is escorted to the throne room, where her robot and human subjects - including a disguised Doctor - await her. With the star certificate a binding contract, Belinda is to be wedded to ‘The Great A.I. Generator’, the merciless robot in control of the planet. Belinda immediately objects to the enforced wedding, even more so when she learns that it involves her conversion into a robot. Sacha 55 introduces Belinda to their ‘designated librarian’, the Doctor, who explains how the planet was once united in peace, until something changed ten years ago. The Doctor also gives Belinda a hidden message, telling her that the robots are unable to hear every ninth word and warning her to prepare for a rebel attack. At the Doctor’s word, the servants draw guns and open fire on their robot overlords; a pitched battle ensues, and most of the rebels, including Sacha 55, are killed. As the robots close in, the Doctor teleports himself, Belinda and two other rebels to the safety of their base, inadvertently taking a small polishing-bot with them. After the Doctor deactivates the robot, Belinda gets to work in the rebels’ field hospital. Noting Belinda’s resemblance to Mondy Flynn from Kastarion 3, the Doctor explains that someone told him to find her - but he won’t say who, wary of breaking the timeline. The Doctor is also puzzled that the A.I. Generator has the exact same certificate as Belinda’s, which he puts into his pocket. The Doctor explains that the time fracture caused him to arrive on Missbelindachandra One six months ago; after the robots impounded his TARDIS, the Doctor fell in with the rebels, and has been working with them ever since. Somehow the robots went back in time three-thousand years, and have become a foundation myth… As the rebel base is rocked by heavy bombardment from robot ships, Belinda feels the pressure of responsibility; she reactivates the polishing-bot, which allows the robots to locate her. After the robots storm the base, Belinda gives herself up to protect the rebels; she and the Doctor are taken back to the throne room. Ignoring the Doctor’s protests, Belinda agrees to the wedding, hoping that her conversion will enable her to appeal to the A.I. Generator and stop the war. To her surprise, the A.I. Generator turns out to be Alan - the overlord’s name is ’AL’, not A.I. - who is now more robot than human. It seems that when Belinda told the robots to find Alan, they carried out her orders - but the time fracture caused them to arrive on Earth ten years ago. When Alan was taken to Missbelindachandra One, he saw his new situation as a game, and took the opportunity to take over the planet with a robot revolution; but instead of impressing Belinda, this just reinforces her belief in her decision to break-up with Alan due to his toxic coercive control. The Doctor realises that Alan’s interface with the machine causes the robots to miss every ninth word - which in turn reveals that deep in his subconscious, Alan also wants saving. When Alan holds up the star diploma, the Doctor uses the polishing-bot to get Belinda’s version of the certificate to her - as Belinda touches the two diplomas together, time fractures. Absorbing the time energy, the Doctor pulls Belinda free, but not before he sees her whole timeline in a fraction of a moment. The time spillage also reverts the robotic Alan back to a sperm and an egg - which promptly get cleaned away by the polishing-bot… A while later, as the robots make reparations and plan peaceful coexistence with the humans, the Doctor’s TARDIS is returned to him. The Doctor is excited to discover the origin of Alan’s star diploma, and believes that his meeting Belinda’s ancestor means that they are somehow connected; but even the amazing interior of the TARDIS will not sway Belinda from just returning home. However, when the Doctor attempts to take Belinda back to 24th May 2025, the TARDIS bounces off that period of Earth - something is repelling them from the day they left. Warning Belinda that they will have to take the long way home, the Doctor dematerialises the TARDIS; as the ship vanishes, wreckage of Earth floats past in space - including Belinda’s star diploma…
