'The Great Escape' by Dennis Heaton

At a top-secret government research facility, a creature breaks out of its cage and escapes into the outside world… At Cross Photonics, Evan and Dylan engage in some target practice. Dylan voices her concern that with Ange and Mac gone the team is falling apart, but she is interrupted by a phone call from Detective Harlow, who has found evidence of a dinosaur incursion in a car park. Evan is puzzled, as the Anomaly Detector has not detected any trace of a portal in the last seventy-two hours… After meeting Harlow at the car park, Dylan and Evan follow the creature’s trail down a stairwell and outside to the dumpsters, where they find a Terror Bird going through the rubbish. Seeing a tag around the creature’s ankle, Dylan realises that it is Leggy, the baby Terror Bird she and Evan encountered at the train yard grow-op, now fully grown and very dangerous. However, before they can capture the bird it is scared off by the arrival of a team of Project Magnet soldiers, led by the intractable Major Douglas. After warning off the two civilians, Major Douglas and his team track the creature to the Thunderbird Ice Skating Arena; they immediately evacuate the building, sealing it off so that they can find and secure the creature. Meanwhile, Evan and Dylan pay a visit to Lieutenant Leeds, demanding to know why he lied about returning Leggy back through the anomaly. Ken defends his actions as a means of securing government funding for his operation, and is surprised to learn of the major’s current mission; he offers to give Evan and Dylan access to Leggy’s tracking signal, only to find that he doesn’t have the security clearance any more. After hacking the system to obtain the frequency, Evan and Dylan race to the ice rink and sneak in past the cordon. They have to find Leggy before the soldiers do – and before the frightened creature attacks…
