'Knight By a Nose' by William Elliot

Michael’s friend, Maxine Fleming, takes out her thoroughbred racehorse, Knightrider, for a ride; but the animal shatters its leg in a fall, and, despite Maxine’s protestations, is immediately put down by a vet. When Michael decides to look into the matter he discovers that Maxine's partner, Tommy Lee Burgess, staged the horse’s death in a desperate scheme to recover his gambling debts – he now plans to sell off Knightrider, who is still very much alive…
