'Short Trips': 'Home Again, Home Again' (1 Part) by Felicity Barker |
Ian and Barbara are delighted when the TARDIS returns them to Coal Hill School – until they learn they have landed in June 1963, five months before they departed with the Doctor and Susan. The two schoolteachers are happy to stay, but the Doctor is horrified, fearing the danger of crossing their own timelines, and is desperate for them all to leave. An argument quickly breaks out, and the Doctor is left alone after everyone else storms off. Barbara and Ian soon find themselves caught up in a discipline case involving a boy named Sidney, who has bullied Susan in particular, whilst trying not to give themselves away to their past selves. Eventually Ian and Barbara realise the folly of staying, and they return to the TARDIS. Concerned after Susan, the Doctor asks his friends to find her, then resolves to get them home in their correct time by summoning his own people for help. Barbara and Ian save Susan from Sidney, giving him a stern warning in the process; the trio return to the TARDIS, arriving just in time for Susan to stop the Doctor from taking his drastic course of action. Together they depart in the TARDIS, knowing that wherever it may take them next, the ship will always be home to them…
