'Exit Wounds' by Chris Chibnall

As the Torchwood team pull themselves from the rubble of the destroyed building, Jack receives a communication from Captain John Hart: with Jack’s long lost brother, Gray, now his prisoner, John spitefully declares that he going to tear Jack’s world apart. Toshiko’s scanner immediately registers major Rift flares across Cardiff, centred on its police station, central server building, hospital – and the Torchwood Hub. Despatching his team to each site, Jack returns to base and finds Captain John waiting for him; John declares his love for his friend – and then shoots him down point blank with two machine guns. Arriving at police headquarters, Gwen and Rhys learn from P.C. Andy that Weevils attacked the building and slaughtered the force’s foremost officers. While Tosh and Ianto deal with three spectral, black-cloaked figures armed with scythes at the City Central Server, Owen subdues a vicious alien Hoix at St. Helen’s Hospital. Returning to life, Jack finds himself bound with electrified chains to a wall in the Hub, as a petulant John explains his anger at being dumped and belittled by him; after activating Torchwood’s giant Rift Manipulator, John teleports himself and his prisoner to the roof of the city’s castle to watch the carnage he is about to unleash. Having contacted each member of the Torchwood team and ordered them onto the roofs of their buildings, John activates a control on his wrist device that detonates fifteen explosive devices situated across Cardiff, instantly plummeting the city into flame and chaos. Gwen takes charge of the situation, instructing her team and the police on their response to the emergency. Tosh and Ianto are shocked to learn that without power for the coolant systems, the Turnmill Nuclear Plant’s core is about to go into meltdown… Using the Rift to transport Jack back in time to 27AD, John tells Jack that he is being forced to working against him – his wrist device has been molecularly bonded to his wrist, and is booby-trapped with explosives. Turning round Jack is astonished to meet his brother Gray, but the reunion with his estranged brother is far from happy, as Gray promptly stabs Jack in the chest. Gray is consumed by anger, bitterly resenting Jack for leaving him during the attack on the Boeshane Peninsula where they grew up; Gray’s abandonment led to his capture and brutal torture by the alien invaders, a long, harrowing experience that sent him over the brink into madness; desperate for revenge, Gray now plans to bury Jack in the ground, condemning him to an unending cycle of death and resurrection beneath what will eventually become the site of the city Jack has sworn to protect. Forced to carry out Gray’s wishes, John throws Jack his ring as a parting gift, and then begins burying his former lover… Gray uses the Rift to transport himself to the present, materialising inside Torchwood’s underground Vault; detecting the disturbance, Tosh notifies Gwen, who immediately sets off to investigate. Arriving at the Hub to find John waiting for her, Gwen pulls a gun and demands an explanation; John manages to convince her that he was working for Gray under duress, and now that his wrist device can be removed, offers to help Gwen locate and rescue Jack from his prison beneath the city. Down in the Vault, Gray releases the imprisoned Weevils and then activates a control device that sends them into a vicious frenzy; all across Cardiff, Weevils emerge from the sewers and begin to attack the populace… Unable to evade the ferocious creatures roaming the streets, Tosh and Ianto leave it to Owen to use his ability as ‘King of the Weevils’ to make his way to the power station. Back at the Hub, Gwen and John are saved from a Weevil attack by the timely arrival of Tosh and Ianto, who gun down the creatures; Gwen, Ianto and John take the Weevils back to the Vault, but Gray appears and locks them inside the cells with the monsters… Having arrived at the power station, Owen contacts Tosh for help; still working at her station, Tosh attempts to remotely re-route the station’s auxiliary power, but she is shot in the stomach by Gray. Hearing an odd banging coming from the morgue, Gray leaves the badly bleeding Tosh for dead and investigates, but when he pulls out the drawer where the sound is coming from, he is astounded to find Jack lying inside. Pulling himself free, Jack reveals how, in 1901, Torchwood dug him up after tracking the anomalous signal from John’s ring; realising that he had crossed his own timeline, Jack told his colleagues to freeze him in the morgue to ensure that he and his earlier self never met, instructing them to set him to defrost in a hundred and seven years time, when he could confront Gray. Jack forgives Gray for his actions, but when his brother refuses to absolve him in return, Jack has no option but to overpower Gray with a drug-soaked handkerchief. Down in the cells, John uses his tracking device to generate a recall signal, sending the packs of Weevils scurrying back into the city sewers. Dragging herself to the medical bay, Tosh tries to stop herself bleeding to death while she contacts Owen over the comm system; hiding the fact that she is dying, Tosh warns Owen to head for safety as she activates the system’s protocols so that they can vent the irradiated fuel into the control bunker itself; however, before Owen can get clear, a power surge activates the security system, sealing him inside. Realising that he is about to die a second time, Owen is furious, but Tosh manages to calm him down, and as the two friends bid each other an emotional goodbye, the room floods with irradiated fuel, killing Owen. Having freed Gwen, Ianto and John from the cells, Jack arrives at the medical bay to find Tosh lying on the floor, her life ebbing away; after telling her friends that they have lost Owen, Tosh dies in Jack’s arms…

Some time later, as Cardiff recovers from its recent devastation, John joins Jack in the morgue as he consigns his unconscious brother to cryogenic storage; reassuring Jack that the death and destruction was not his fault, John kisses his former partner good-bye and leaves. Jack and Gwen begin the task of putting their fallen colleagues’ possessions into storage; meanwhile, Ianto removes Owen and Tosh’s access from the Torchwood computer systems, inadvertently triggering a pre-recorded message from Toshiko, in which she thanks Jack for the time she spent working with him. Mourning the loss of his comrades, Jack vows to carry on Torchwood’s mission…
