Horrified by Xander’s death, Buffy realises it is all her fault for trusting D’Hoffryn instead of her friends; in fury she wishes that she had never given the demon his powers – a wish that ‘Anya’ instantly grants. ‘Anya’ also restores Xander back to life, having gained her vengeance by showing him what an intangible life is like. As Buffy and the Scoobies take on D’Hoffryn, the elder vengeance demon kills ‘Anya’ for her betrayal; seeing his actions, D’Hoffryn’s minions desert him, leaving him vulnerable to the Scoobies’ attack. After losing a hand to Buffy’s scythe, D’Hoffryn retreats to a Hell dimension med centre for help; but Buffy and her gang use the ‘Vampyr’ book to boost Dawn’s Key power, allowing them to pursue their quarry. The cornered vengeance demon tries to bargain his way free – and promptly loses his head to Buffy’s scythe… Two weeks later, Buffy and her friends are trying to make the most of the peace and quiet. They also finally figure out what to do with the ‘Vampyr’ book: they will set up a new Council, with Buffy, Willow and Giles as members. It’s a big, frightening step – but all part of owning their future…
